I have been a Christian for the majority of my life, accepting Christ into my heart at the young age of six (or so) years. I attended church with my family every Sunday morning and went to Wheaton Christian Grammer School from 2nd-8th grade. I know now that my parents worked hard and were intentional in rooting me in a strong Christian community. Approaching high school I received the opportunity to attend Wheaton Academy (a private Christian high school); however I consciously made the decision not to go, but instead enroll in the local public high school. I was craving something different, any diversity I could find within my home town of Wheaton. New faces, new backgrounds, new stories. This was not out of a rebellious spirit, but one that I now recognize was from the Lord. He planted this drive and curiosity in my heart. I was called to step out of my comfort zone and be an example of Christ’s love and acceptance for my surrounding peers. After high school, I went on to attend a private catholic university, that again was flooded with a diverse crowd to connect with in Christ’s love! My faith in the Lord never ceased, and during my Junior year I attended my friend’s church in Charlotte (NC). On that particular Sunday, they were having an altar call to receive the sacrament of baptism. I felt the clear calling from the Lord to say yes and I got baptized! Every detail of that day still remains so clear to me.
After college, I was looking for a new home church and was invited by a friend to attend Church of the Resurrection. I was captivated by the liturgy, weekly Eucharist and clear movement of the Holy Spirit. My soul felt at home. Fun fact, that friend (Ridgeway “RW” Burns) who introduced me to Resurrection, went on to become my husband! We’ve been married eight years and have two lovely girls, Flora and Birdie. We’ve settled in Wheaton, just a five minute drive away from the church.
I strive to live out the life the Lord has called me to, in peace and with a trusting heart. Over and over again I feel the Lord’s steady hand of protection and provision for me and my family through the highs and lows of this earthly world. What a blessing it is to be a child of God. “The Lord will keep you from all harm, he will watch over your life; the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.” Psalm 121: 7-8
