We are excited to announce that we are adding a new member to our worship staff team at Resurrection. Beginning September 1, Alec Smith will join our staff in the part-time role of Worship Director. Alec’s responsibilities will include sharing worship leading responsibilities alongside Steve and our awesome volunteer worship leaders, as well as providing pastoral and administrative leadership for the Music Team.
We are thrilled to welcome Alec and his wife Jill back into our community at Resurrection! Alec is a gifted worship leader and musician with a true heart for the kingdom. He has had extensive experience as a worship leader within the ACNA since his family moved away in 2008. You can welcome the Smiths this Sunday at Resurrection, and read more of their story below.
Alec and Jill met at Wheaton College and attended Resurrection after graduating, from 2004-2008. Alec and Jill moved to Charlottesville, Virginia in July 2008, to fulfill God's calling on Alec's life to become an attorney. In their ten year sojourn from Resurrection, God has blessed their family with four children: Eden (10), Alec Wesley (7), Everley (6), and Blythe (3). The Smiths have been through many moves and transitions in those ten years, but God's faithfulness has been the unifying thread through every joy and challenge.
One of the few, the proud, Alec served as a U.S. Marine Corps Captain and Judge Advocate ("JAG") with a heart for justice and mercy. As a criminal defense attorney in the Marines, Alec represented military servicemembers charged with misconduct. He now serves as legal advisor to a U.S. District Judge, preparing rulings of the court and providing operational and policy advice to the District of South Carolina's rehabilitative drug court. After the Smiths' return to Chicago, Alec will continue serving the South Carolina Judge for whom he has worked the last three years on a full-time telework basis.
Worship through music is a lifelong passion for Alec. For the past 20 years he has consistently served as a musician, vocalist, and team leader in diverse worship contexts. Alec plays a few instruments, but on Sunday mornings at Resurrection, you'll find him most often on guitar or piano. Alec thinks the Christian life is perhaps best summed up in Micah 6:8 - "What does God require of you? To do justice, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God."
