I arrived at Church of the Resurrection unfamiliar with liturgical practice and the church calendar. One of my first interactions with the Resurrection community occurred on Ash Wednesday in 2008, at the evening service. I was ushered into my Lenten journey that year by a time of special repentance, even without any foreknowledge of the purpose of Ash Wednesday, and my spirit was quickened tremendously in preparation for Easter. I hope what follows is helpful as a reminder to those of you who are already familiar with Ash Wednesday, and helpful as new information for those of you who aren’t!

I grew up in France, where All Saint’s day (“Toussaint”) is a national holiday celebrated mainly by a two-week vacation for schoolchildren. At the time I did not bother to wonder what the weeks of freedom commemorated, and it was only recently that I stopped to think about those early holidays in conjunction with the Church celebration I have come to love.I grew up in France, where All Saint’s day (“Toussaint”) is a national holiday celebrated mainly by a two-week vacation for schoolchildren.
