We arrived safely home from Thailand over the weekend after our 24 hour travels, thankful to be at home and in our own beds. We’re now trying to beat the Chicago heat and jetlag. Our trip flew by…I was most impressed with the staff at the Garden of Hope who live in the reality of a ministry that moves so slowly and on the engine of prayer–yours and mine. Helping women ...Continue Reading

On Sunday, a few days ago, we went as a team to the night market which surrounds a large Buddhist Temple, where monks with shaved heads and orange garments are constantly offering incense to gold statues. And along the thoroughfare, crowded with international shoppers looking for a good deal and yielding to the vendors many wily strategies for parting Westerners from their money, I saw every ...Continue Reading

It has been a joy for those of us volunteering with the Garden’s Women’s Resource Program (WRP) to be with the Thai woman who leads WRP. We loved her instantly! She became a Christian at age 9 by praying to the “Unknown God” before there were any Christian family, friends, or other Christian influences in her life. When she speaks about the Gospel, there is authority ...Continue Reading

Today the women on our team will accompany Maeko, the Japanese worker at the Center, on outreach to women in the bars. The workers are few here. The rule is you must go out two by two, never alone to do outreach in the bars. The spiritual battle is thick, and without prayer support it’s very dangerous, especially for missionaries and foreigners who are the most unaware and least ...Continue Reading

Yesterday our taxi driver unloaded us from his red covered pick-up in front of a gated Thai temple with curved golden horns reaching skyward. Directly across the street from this temple is the Garden of Hope’s Center. A four story yellow building with balconies on each floor, the center is only about 15 feet wide, each floor a long narrow unit reached by a steep staircase. The first ...Continue Reading

It’s 10 a.m. and I’m feeling like an elephant, stuffed with an omelet, fresh croissants, sweet watermelon, and two cups of earl gray tea. Our team dines on the open-air patio at the Hospitality Training Center, where Christa from the Garden of Hope directs a team of volunteers and Thai women to create these scrumptious treats each day. The three Thai women who serve us are in ...Continue Reading

It was either the pitter-patter of Gabe’s feet running across the concrete, or it was our prayers pitter-pattering upward to God from the small room in the Chaing-Mai childrens drop-in center. We prayed all at once, like raindrops, or Gabe’s feet running to dad. This prayer was offered, ‘In Thai style’ as Mark from The Garden explained. God hears our prayers all at ...Continue Reading

We are so excited to finally be here! We traveled together to the airport on Monday morning for the first leg of the trip—a thirteen hour flight to Seoul, Korea where we had a five hour layover. Then we caught a flight to Chiang Mai, Thailand and landed safely about five hours later. With the driving, flying, and waiting, we spent almost a full 24 hrs traveling! We are ...Continue Reading
