On an ordinary Tuesday last spring, the Dean of Student Life at an evangelical Christian college in the Midwest said to me, her graduate assistant, "Marcy, the evangelical culture of our campus does a lot to prepare its students for the inevitability of marriage, but we do little to set them up for singleness. We need to do better. You should be the one to speak with them," she decided, "and the title of your talk should be, 'Single by Choice.'"

Can married and single people be friends? It seems simple enough in theory. But as many of us know from practice, these kinds of friendships can carry a lot of emotional baggage and jealousy—and not just about sex. How can we understand one another when our domestic lives look so different?

Which is why I was delighted to interview Adam Beyer about the two co-op gardens that he, Jeannie and Nate Iseman, and several others from Church of the Resurrection have started. One of my favorite parts about summer has always been fresh veggies. As Christians, we believe living in the community of the local church is really important. This is where we see God’s presence are transformed into Christ’s image. But living in the beautiful reality of the fellowship of the church community is not an easy thing. On Maundy Thursday we are not confronted with the idyllic Normal Rockwell painting of a blissful, smiling family around a dinner table. No. Instead, we see feet.As Christians, we believe living in the community of the local church is really important. This is where we see God’s presence are transformed into Christ’s image. I hate underwater scenes in movies. Those images of shadowy water speckled with sea rubble conjure up a sense of both vastness and crushing weight that makes my chest constrict. Yet here I am confronted with this thought–that the purpose of my heart is like deep water–deep, opaque water, difficult to navigate without a paralyzing consciousness of sin. Thank heavens for the second image: a friend of understanding holding a bucket with a long cord, dropping far down to penetrate the depths of my soul.
