Following the service, I sat down with him to discuss the process of becoming a deacon and what the service was like for him.On May 8, Gregory Whitaker was ordained as a deacon at Resurrection. As our church reached the Holy Week destination of Easter morning, I found my mind teeming with details. I hoped I could keep straight, my body stressed, my spirit unsure. I didn't feel tremendously Easter-ish.

"This is the night, when you brought our fathers, the children of Israel, out of bondage in Egypt, and led them through the Red Sea on dry land.
This is the night when all who believe in Christ are delivered from the gloom of sin, and are restored to grace and holiness of life.
This is the night, when Christ broke the bonds of death and hell, and rose victorious from the grave.

As a member of the music team at Church of the Resurrection, I am very aware of the fact that the perspective of a musician is different from that of a congregant. When I am worshiping from the stage, I experience a closeness to the altar, the cross, and the congregation. In particular, I feel the energy of the sanctuary around me in the faces of those in front of me.

As we walk through Christ's last week together each year, we are drawn in to the story of his suffering and sacrifice. There is so much to take in during that week as we worship together.
A few years ago I wrote "Passion Song" which recalls several of the major events during Holy Week. I was inspired to write it while reflecting on Jesus' earthly relationships.

This is the third year that we have offered a Wednesday evening service during Holy Week. Tenebrae is an ancient, contemplative service where light is gradually reduced as a candle is extinguished after each Scripture reading and musical response. It was a beautiful opportunity to experience an overview of the story of Holy Week before we plunge into the narrative in detail in the triduum (Thursday, Friday, and Saturday).
